The ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the Green Power Morocco 1 photovoltaic solar park took place on Tuesday, July 26, with great fanfare in the rural town of Hjar Nhal south of Tangier. The commissioning of this 30 MWp solar power plant, whose objective is to strengthen the Kingdom’s electricity production capacities from renewable sources, is scheduled for 2023. Covering an area of 72 hectares, “This project reflects the desire of the GPM Holding Group to contribute to the objectives that the public authorities have set themselves in terms of the development of renewable energies and reflects the Group’s strong commitment to continue its anchoring as a reference economic operator in the northern provinces of the Kingdom”, affirmed Philip Jenkins, CEO of GPM Holding, during this ceremony which took place in the presence of Mohamed Mhidia, wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, as well as actors carrying out the project. and their various partners.
The speaker wanted to share the pride of GPM Holding as a solid and reliable partner of the wilaya of the region. “GPM Holding wishes to pursue the development of new structuring projects for the region”, underlined Mr. Jenkins.
With an overall investment of nearly 370 million dirhams, this first Green Power Morocco 1 park was co-developed as an independent electricity project (IPP project) by GPM Holding and AMEA Power. In this sense, a contract for the supply of electrical energy has been concluded with the company Amendis acting as manager of the electricity distribution network in the region and it will therefore be connected to the medium voltage network (urban network). “This solar power plant developed by the company Green Power Morocco within the framework of law n°13-09 relating to renewable energies for the production of electrical energy, is intended exclusively for the own use of the delegated manager Amendis-Tangier to satisfy their ancillary service needs. This is a first at the national level,” said Jalal Benhayoun, Director General of the Regional Investment Center (CRI TTA).
This photovoltaic park is, according to the speaker, the realization of an integrated vision of the Green Power group, ranging from the manufacture of panels through its subsidiary AlMaden also operational in the region (in the province of Al Hoceima) since 2018 until to the production of energy through this site. “This project is the result of the combined efforts of various actors at local and central level to accelerate the energy and economic transition towards a low-carbon model, now imposed and adopted by all international standards,” said Mr. Benhayoun, while welcoming the efforts of all stakeholders, who have invested in “removing all the constraints and obstacles to the implementation of this promising project under the leadership of the wali of the region”. For his part, Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power, expressed the pride of the Emirati company to have successfully co-developed this project with its partner GPM Holding. “This is the first project for AMEA Power to reach financial close in Morocco. We also have a portfolio of solar and wind projects at an advanced stage of development in this beautiful sister country of the United Arab Emirates,” he said.
Having succeeded in positioning itself as a world leader in renewable energies, Morocco remains, continued Mr. Al Nowais, a strategic market for AMEA Power. “We will continue to deploy all means in order to contribute, as an international IPP developer, to supporting the country’s efforts to reach a level of 52% renewable energy in the energy mix by 2030”, he added. He underlines.
This park also aims to contribute to reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels in accordance with the international commitments made by the Kingdom, and is part of a project to develop three photovoltaic parks with a total capacity of 90MW. To achieve these objectives, those responsible for this project have opted for a technology, photovoltaic panels installed on solar trackers which, thanks to their dynamic aspect, make it possible to optimize energy production by following the trajectory of the sun from sunrise to ‘at bedtime.
