For its second generation, the DS4 has weapons of safer value, which can shake up the German competition.

The DS 4 is the high-end compact of the French firm which is between the DS3 and the DS7. It aims to appeal to buyers looking for a vehicle a little larger than a high-end and less traditional compact, such as the Audi A3, the BMW 1 Series or the Mercedes Class A. The premium compact is available under regular shape and as DS4 Cross. It’s an SUV-style version with a few design tricks making it feel beefier and taller. There is also a finish called Performance Line that DS considers a third distinct version.

The DS4 shares much of its technology with a range of sedans and SUVs offered by Peugeot and Citroën. The difference is that it markets itself as a premium brand and focuses on comfort, style and technology.

It’s a bit taller than most other compacts, and that height has been used to give it particularly large wheels. Our test vehicle rode on 19-inch alloys. And although the French compact only needs to cover a transverse engine and front-wheel drive, the hood is long and relatively low. Combined with the high rear section, this gives the DS4 a slight shooting brake silhouette. Strong grille, gouge on the sides and typically DS gimmicks (scale lights, flush handles), these elements come to treat its presentation in parallel.

Refined interior

The interior of the DS4 is really successful. It’s very uncluttered with a few physical buttons, such as the window switches on the driver’s door and the climate control controls, which blend seamlessly into the design. Everything feels solidly put together, and some materials even eclipse those of German competitors, especially the soft-touch dash top and the leather that adorns most other surfaces you touch a lot.

Meanwhile, all DS4s get manually adjustable lumbar support as standard (electric lumbar adjustment is only available on the Cross trim). The French compact also comes standard with a 7-inch digital instrument panel, which is supported by a large, easy-to-read and configurable head-up display. In terms of infotainment, the 10-inch touchscreen displays very clear graphics, but it takes a while to respond to inputs and the icons are rather small. To aid handling of the latter, DS has added a second, smaller touchscreen just in front of the armrest. It allows you to shortcut to different apps.

As for forward visibility, you’ll have no problem with slim window jambs. Rear visibility is less good, however, due to the cut roof line which restricts the view. Fortunately, all versions are equipped with rear parking sensors and a rear view camera. And despite the dashboard’s minimalist design, you’ll find plenty of storage space, including a covered area that holds two cupholders, a USB port and a slot for your phone. The door bins aren’t the biggest, but you’ll be able to put a drink and a few other items in them.

The DS4 offers plenty of legroom and shoulder room for tall adults in the front seats. On the other hand, the rear space is not as generous, but the trunk offers a large storage volume (430 liters), which is excellent for its category.

Diesel engine

In Europe, the DS4 is offered with different engines: diesel, petrol, hybrid and electric. In Morocco, DS is offered only in diesel version. This is the 1.5 liter block of 130 hp attached to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The latter is smooth enough for upshifts, but jerky for downshifts, making it difficult to slow down smoothly. It’s weakest when you’re in slow traffic.

The supple suspension setup makes the French compact one of the most comfortable cars in its class, allowing it to float over potholes and road imperfections. This is especially true when traveling around town at low speeds, but at higher speeds the vehicle begins to become less stable.

The 130 hp have no trouble moving the vehicle and the performance is correct. The 0 to 100 km is done in 10.9 seconds. The times remain good, thanks to the torque of 300 Nm available from the lowest revs, enough to ensure overtaking in complete safety. We appreciate the good soundproofing of the car, which allows you not to suffer too much on board, and which filters engine vibrations as well as road and air noise.


As a rival to premium compacts, the DS4 is a welcome addition. It does not seek to copy its Teutonic rivals, but on the contrary offers an interesting alternative and will not fail to seduce buyers who are not content to follow the herd. It is an excellent vehicle that drives well, with a high quality interior and new technologies at a competitive price.
