Olympic Update: Team Canada wraps up Commonwealth Games with 92 medals

Before the curtain fell on the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on Monday, Team Canada athletes added more than 30 medals to the country’s haul.

Meanwhile, on this side of the Atlantic, several Canadians made it to the podium at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax. Headlining the Canadian team at this competition was Olympic medalist Katie Vincent who scored a hat trick to win three gold medals.

Here is a summary of the highlights from the weekend:

Commonwealth Games: A shower of medals 🤩

Team Canada’s final medal tally at the 2022 Commonwealth Games includes 26 gold, 32 silver and 34 bronze, giving the country third place in the medal standings behind Australia (178 medals) and England (176 medals).

Here are some highlights from the last days of competition:

Diver Mia Vallée won three medals. She first dominated the 1m springboard competition on Friday, winning her first gold medal, before adding bronze medals in the women’s 3m springboard and 3m synchro events with Margo Erlam. Rylan Wiens won silver medals in the men’s 10m platform and 10m synchro events alongside teammate Nathan Zsombor-Murray. Caeli McKay won bronze in the women’s 10m platform event.

Canada collected 12 medals in wrestling, tying India for the nation with the most medals in the sport. Three gold medals are included in this total. Amar Dhesi won in men’s freestyle at 125 kg, Nishan Randhawa in men’s freestyle at 97 kg and Justina Di Stasio won the women’s event at 76 kg.

Camryn Rogers continued her impressive progression in the women’s hammer throw event by winning the gold medal and setting the Commonwealth Games record in qualifying. Her teammate Jillian Weir joined her on the podium, winning bronze 20 years after her father Robert won bronze in the discus throw at the Commonwealth Games in 2002.

Olympic bronze medalist Evan Dunfee put in a spectacular performance on Sunday to win gold in the 10 km walk, setting a Canadian record and a Commonwealth Games record. Canada also won gold in the women’s 4x400m relay.

Canada has won four medals in boxing, including defending world champion Tammara Thibeault’s gold in the women’s 75kg event. She is the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games.

Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes successfully defended their title won four years ago as beach volleyball made its Commonwealth Games debut. They defeated the Australian duo in three sets. This golden performance followed the silver medal won by Sam Schachter and Daniel Dearing who lost in the final against an Australian team.

Canada won five medals in rhythmic gymnastics to top the medal tally in the sport. After gold in the team event, Carmel Kallemaa won silver in clubs and bronze in ribbon and hoop while Suzanna Shahbazian took silver in ball.

Canada’s last medal in Birmingham was Michelle Li’s silver in badminton. She lost in the women’s singles final to former world champion and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu of India.

Katie Vincent is Canada’s headliner at the Sprint Canoe World Championships 🙌

A year after stepping onto the Olympic podium, Katie Vincent reached the top step of the podium three times at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax.

All of her victories have been achieved in events that are not on the Olympic programme, namely the women’s C-1 5000m, then as a member of the women’s C-4 500m and the mixed C-2 500m teams, this gold having been won with Connor Fitzpatrick. Vincent finished fifth in the women’s C-1 200m event on the Olympic program. She and Sloan Mackenzie placed sixth in the women’s C-2 500m.

Sophia Jensen won silver in the women’s C-1 500m, which is not an Olympic event, and was part of the gold medal team in the C-4 500m. Andréanne Langlois and Tosha Hrebacka won bronze in the women’s K-2 200m, another event not on the Olympic program. Canada’s only medal on the men’s side was bronze won by Craig Spence and Bret Himmelman in the C-2 1000m, a non-Olympic event.

Another Diamond League medal for Mitton 🥉

Just three days after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, Sarah Mitton traveled to Poland where she won bronze in the shot put at the Diamond League meet in Chorzów. It was Mitton’s second Diamond League medal this season as she threw 19.44m. She has qualified for the Diamond League final which will take place in Zurich in early September.
